Buccal Swab Test Collection
Step-by-step process for a successful cheek cell sample collection without cross-contamination.
Preparation for patient
- Night before Collection: Use your normal nightly routine of brushing and flossing of teeth, but do not use mouthwash.
- Morning of Collection: Do not eat, brush or floss your teeth, use mouthwash, chew gum or use any tobacco, or coffee products.
Sample collection - Buccal Swab
- 1The collection package:
- The cotton swab 2 pieces (Inner)
- The paper envelope (Outside)
- Sticker name tag

Peel open the cotton tipped applicators just enough to remove the cotton swabs. Remove one cotton swab applicator. Do not touch the cotton tip.
>>> Open your mouth and aggressively scrape the inside of your cheek (left side) with the cotton swab using a back and forth, and up and down motion for at least 2 mins.
>>> Air dry for 2 mins (Do not allow the sample to touch the floor or any surface.)
>>> Use the same cotton swab scrape the same side of your cheek again for 2 mins.
Air dry for 2 mins.

Use another cotton swab (the 2nd) aggressively scrape the inside of your cheek (right side) following Step 2.

Allow swab applicators to air dry for 15-20 minutes. Return them, swab first, to the applicator package. Seal package inside the paper envelope.

Write a name-surname, date of birth and attach on the envelope.
